Understanding Reactions: The Boiling Water Analogy in Life and Support — a framework for understanding emotional responses in care environments.

When water is heated, it does not boil immediately. It warms gradually, and then — at a certain point — it reaches a threshold and changes state entirely. Human emotional responses work in a similar way. Stress, frustration, and distress accumulate over time, and when the threshold is reached, the response can seem sudden and disproportionate to those around us.

In health and social care, understanding this dynamic is essential. Staff who recognise the signs of escalating distress — in themselves and in the people they support — are better equipped to intervene early, de-escalate effectively, and prevent harm.

MDT Online's training programmes include modules on emotional regulation, de-escalation, and trauma-informed practice. Contact us to find out how we can support your team.
